Classes meet daily from Monday through Thursday and each class lasts about 2 1/2 hours. Sailors who successfully complete the class are awarded a “Skipper's Card” which allows use of the boats during Recreational Sailing hours at no additional cost.  An optional book, "Start Sailing Right", by the United States Sailing Association is available for $15 at the Sailing Center.

BEGINNING SAILING
Beginners learn the basics of sailing aboard 12ft Tech dinghies. Fundamentals of steering, changing direction by tacking and jibing, reading wind patterns and sail trim are stressed. Safety, nomenclature, knots and rules of the road are also covered.

INTERMEDIATE SAILING
Intermediates sail aboard high performance 14ft Flying Junior sloops and work on advanced boat-handling techniques. Use of the jib and spinnaker are also covered.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Sailing lessons for children (ages 10-12) and youths (ages 13-16) are also available during the second and third Terms. Children's beginner classes are held mornings from 9-11:30am, Monday-Thursday, for 4 weeks. The lessons consist of approximately 40 hours of instruction in sailing fundamentals, seamanship and safety. Steering, docking, sail trim and care of the boats are stressed. Beginners will use 12 foot Tech dinghies while on the water. All class members will receive a “Certificate of Completion” at the conclusion of the class.

Youth classes are held afternoons during the second and third terms from 1-3:30pm, Monday-Thursday, for 4 weeks. Beginners and Intermediates follow the same course material as adult sailors and are taught at the faster, adult pace in 14 ft. Flying Junior Sloops. All class members will receive a “Certificate of Completion” at the completion of the class.

Please note: All Children and Youth sailors must pass a 25 yard swim check in order to participate in on the water sailing lessons.

RACING CLASS

For those sailors interested in competitive sailboat racing, a two-week Racing Class is offered for the 2008 season. Instruction includes racing rules and tactics as well as boat handling techniques. The course finishes with the Great Salt Pond Regatta to determine the class champion. Most class participants go on to race in our summer Friday Night racing series. The cost is $275.00 per sailor.

KEELBOAT CLASSES

Two separate classes will be held during the third term from July 21 - 31 and August 4 - 14. Using our J-24 and Etchell 22 to teach boat handling, mooring and docking, on-board systems, introductory navigation and man overboard situations. We require intermediate sailing as a prerequisite and no Skippers Card will be issued as the boats are not available for recreational use. The cost is $300.00 per student.
