The URI Sailing Team affords an opportunity for students to participate in competitive intercollegiate sailing. The Team is a member of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association and sails in the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association district. Founded in 1935 by Professor Ed Shock, the Sailing Team has had numerous successes including 3 National Dinghy Championships, 10 National Big Boat Championships and the only World Championship ever won by a University team. The Team has also produced thirty-one All-American, Honorable Mention and Crew All-Star sailors. During the Fall of 2009, the team represented the United States for the 11th time at the Student Yachting World Championships in Marseilles, France and finished 4th in the world.
Members sail during both the spring and fall semesters and compete on a national level in eighty to ninety regattas a year. Practices are held daily; Tuesday through Friday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. on, using a fleet of eighteen matched Flying Junior sloops. The Team holds a weekly meeting Tuesday evenings in the Memorial Union. New sailors are always welcome.
