Theft
The portability and convenience of laptops is mitigated for many people by the fear of theft. A major concern for many students and parents (who often pay for the systems) is security. How can theft be prevented? What is the best way to protect a valuable investment?
In a large community such as URI, some theft does occur. RAM Computers offers a choice of security devices to help secure and protect your laptop or desktop. For example, we offer the Kryptonite key lock, which secures the computer to a desk or other immovable object.
Fire and Theft Insurance
Finally, check with your homeowner's insurance agent. Most policies include fire and theft coverage for electronic equipment, and most allow you to add a rider to the policy to protect your laptop. Most will cover the computer even if it isn't in the home.
Accidental damage
Last year over twenty Rhody Ready laptops were severely damaged when beverages were spilled onto the keyboard and during the first week of the fall semester 12 students accidentally and severely damaged their new laptops in a variety of ways. These repairs tend be very costly and are not covered by the standard warranty. For complete peace of mind, we recommend investing in the accidental damage warranties offered by Dell, Toshiba, IBM, and Apple. For less than $1 per week, most of these policies will cover accidental drops, spills, or physical damage for three years.
