GreenShare Program
Marion Gold, Coordinator

The University of Rhode Island Cooperative Extension's GreenShare Program provides scientifically accurate and environmentally sound information on management of suburban and urban landscapes.

Integrated pest management, pollution prevention and sustainable landscaping are the guiding principles of all GreenShare programs. GreenShare focuses on use of native and pest resistant plants to minimize pesticide use and reduce risks associated with exotic invasives.

The program targets all audiences involved with these landscapes from growers and landscapers to retail garden centers and homeowners. GreenShare Programs are coordinated by staff at the URI Cooperative Extension Education Center in cooperation with faculty and staff from the Departments of Plant Sciences and Natural Resources Science and the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association.

What's New?

*Check out our GreenShare factsheets online.

*The "Sustainable Trees and Shrubs" manual lists over 250 disease and insect-resistant plants that thrive in Southern New England with
minimal maintenance.

View selected plants from this list on a
virtual tour of our Learning Landscape
Gardens.

TRAINING
GreenShare offers horticultural professionals comprehensive training programs in horticultural fundamentals and their relationship to environmental quality. Seminars and workshops are held throughout the fall and winter months on topics such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Lawns and Gardens, Turf Management, Insect IPM, Woody Plant Identification and Landscaping with Perennials. We also offer special training programs for
garden center employees. The garden center
trainings focus on pesticide safety and environmentally sound methods of managing insect and disease problems in the home landscape.

In addition, GreenShare participates in the Home*A*Syst Pollution Prevention training programs which target reduction of all environmental risks in and around the home.

OUTREACH
GreenShare uses fact sheets, newsletters and regular features in the television and print media information to communicate with Green Industry professionals and the gardening public. Watch for the URI CE Plant Pro segments on the local NBC affiliate (Channel 10 -WJAR) every Monday on the Noon News and every Saturday at 9:00 on Sunrise.

DEMONSTRATION GARDENS
The Learning Landscape Gardens at URI showcase examples of low maintenance and disease and insect resistant plants. The gardens provide a site where "sustainable" plants may be seen and evaluated by members of the Green Industry, scientists, students and the general public. The gardens include a model home landscape featuring disease resistant turf, trees and shrubs, an apple orchard managed with the principles of IPM, an organic vegetable garden, a children's vegetable garden, ornamental grass, perennial and annual gardens.

        GREENSHARE FIELD DAY
The annual GreenShare Field Day, held each September, features the display and sale of plants and environmentally friendly garden products, garden tours, soil tests, a plant clinic and information on the latest research of interest to gardeners and homeowners.

This free event is a day of celebration and environmental education for all ages.
