Adequate Milk Supply:
Although breastfeeding is the "natural" way to feed a baby, it is a skill that needs to be learned. New mothers are often concerned about whether they are producing enough milk. For most women, the more often they put the infant to the breast, the more milk they will have.
Points to Emphasize:
- Frequent nursings
- Avoid bottles, formula, pacifiers
- Adequate rest and fluids
- Night feedings in early weeks to build supply, prevent engorgement
- Fatigue and emotional stress will inhibit letdown reflex; REASSURE
Signs of Adequate Intake in Breastfed Infants:
- 8-12 feeds in 24 hrs
- Audible swallowing in baby when milk lets down
- Baby is alert with good muscle tone and healthy skin
- Baby is content between feeds
- 5, 6, or more wet diapers every 24 hrs
- 3-8 soiled diapers every 24 hrs. for the first 6 weeks
- Wt. gain of 4-7 ounces per week in baby
- Baby recovers birth wt. by 3 wks of age
- Mothers breasts may feel full before feeding and softer after feeding
