How many equinoxes are there on
planet Earth? Can you name them?
There
are two equinoxes on planet Earth. One in March and one in September. We learned back in
Trivia Challenge #1 that the word equinox means "equal night" in Latin. That
translates to mean that on the days of equinox, there is exactly the same amount of
daytime as there is nightime.
The name of the March equinox is "vernal" (meaning green or growing - as it is in springtime); and, the name for the September equinox is "autumnal" (as in autumn).
The vernal equinox falls on the first day of northern-hemisphere spring; and, the autumnal equinox falls on the first day of autumn.
