When
is the Earth closest to the Sun - during the summer or during the winter?
The Earth is actually closer to the Sun during the winter! Can you believe
it? The Earth, we say, is on average about 93 million miles away from the Sun. But because
of the slightly elliptical orbit of the Earth around the Sun, it is about 94,500,000 miles
away from the Sun during the summer and about 91,500,000 miles away during the
winter! So, the Earth is about 3 million miles closer to the Sun during the winter.
Incredible!
