Why does our solar system have an asteroid belt?

 Many astronomers believe that the asteroid belt that circles the Sun is remnants of what could have been another planet or large moon. During the formation of our solar system they speculate that a collision occured causing the body to break up completely leaving a trail of  'space rubble'.
