What is a "new" moon?
A new moon is like the full moon, but you can barely see it! It's almost as dark as the sky. Sort of like a charcoal grey. If you were to look at a new moon in the sky, it would look like a dark circle against the night sky.
The reason you can barely see a new moon is because it is not illuminated by the sun. A full moon is illuninated by the sun. A new moon is illuminated only by the reflected light from the Earth! That's right - and as with everything else in space and astronomy, it has a special name - it's called "Earth Shine".
