Small Acreage Livestock

The Casey Farm

The Casey Farm is an historic property owned by Historic New England and operated by farm manager, Patrick McNiff. The farm is located in Saunderstown, RI and is a resource for information on raising and marketing pastured poultry - layers and broilers.

Pastured poultry: layers and broilers

Layer hens are fenced around moveable coops with poultry electranet fencing.

Two 164 ft. rolls of fencing are using to surround the coops (creating approximately 6,700 sq. ft. or 0.15 acre area.)

The layer hens are moved approximately once per month.

Solar panels are used to power some of the electric fences on the farm.

Pastured poultry: broilers

80 - 90 broilers are raised in 9 ft. by 13 ft. moveable pens. The pens are moved one to two times per day.

The frequent moves encourage more grazing and less grain consumption, which helps to regulate weight gain.

The broilers follow cattle (from The Watson Farm) that are grazed on the pastures. This helps to control fly larva, parasites and to scatter the cattle manure - serving as a form of biological pest control.

Meat processing and marketing

The Casey Farm Manager owns and operates a mobile poultry processing unit and markets pastured broilers. The poultry is available through local farmers markets including one that is held at the Casey Farm. Also available are other locally grown products including eggs, pork, grassfed beef and wool blankets. For more information about poultry processing contact Patrick McNiff, (401) 295-1030.
