Livestock heavy use are protection: geotextile non-woven fabric is placed beneath a top footing of sand and gravel.

The geotextile allows water to drain through but keeps the natural soil fines (beneath the fabric) from mixing with the sand and gravel top footing. The fabric also provides increased weight-bearing strength.
