Small Acreage Livestock

Conduct education with first year URI Animal and Veterinary Science (AVS) students.

On October 11 and 12, 2006, an outdoor site assessment of URI Peckham Farm was conducted with 50 URI AVS students using the existing small acreage livestock fact sheet and site assessment series.

In 2007, the exercise was expanded to include a 1 hour slideshow conducted on September 19 and 20, followed by an outdoor site assessment of Peckham Farm conducted on September 26 and 27. 50 URI AVS students participated.

In 2008, a 2 hour slideshow followed by a tour of Peckham Farm to identify planned and existing BMPs was conducted for 50 URI AVS students on September 17 and 18. This slideshow and tour was repeated for 50 additional URI AVS students in November 2009.

This student education has provided Project staff with an opportunity to use the URI Peckham Farm as a demonstration site and teaching tool, determine the ease of use and effectiveness of the existing fact sheet and site assessment series, develop and refine educational tools, and incorporate land use, water quality and livestock Best Management Practices into the URI Animal and Veterinary Science curriculum.
