To develop environmentally benign, resource
conserving, and economically viable local agriculture through progressive
technologies and market innovations. Emphasis on integrated pest management
and environmental biotechnologies.
Our Gardening

the perfect garden.
Our
Plant Protection
Clinic offers identification of plant insects, weeds and plant/turf
diseases, and provides practical remedies and controls. For a small fee,
samples can be dropped off or mailed to the CEEC for diagnosis.
The
URI CE Master
Gardener Program is a prestigious designation given only to those
who successfully train in various aspects of plant science and complete
a volunteer internship of 50 hours of volunteer work as part of the Master
Gardener Program of the Cooperative Extension Education Center.
The University of Rhode
Island Cooperative
Extension GreenShare Program provides scientifically accurate and
environmentally sound information on management of suburban and urban
landscapes. Integrated pest management, pollution prevention and sustainable
landscaping are the guiding principles of all GreenShare programs. GreenShare
focuses on use of native and pest resistant plants to minimize pesticide
use and reduce risks associated with exotic invasives. The program targets
all audiences involved with these landscapes from growers and landscapers
to retail garden centers and homeowners. GreenShare Programs are coordinated
by staff at the URI Cooperative Extension Education Center in cooperation
with faculty and staff from the Departments of Plant Sciences and Natural
Resources Science and the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association.
Pesticide
Applicator Training Program
In Rhode Island and other states, individuals that apply Restricted Use
Pesticides (RUP's) pesticides (insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides,
herbicides and other pesticides) in the course of their business are required
to obtain a Rhode Island Pesticide Applicator License.
Farmers are required to obtain a Rhode Island Private Applicator Certification
if they will be applying RUP's in the production of crops. Dealers that
will be selling RUP's must obtain a Rhode Island Pesticide Dealers License.
The steps in licensing and certifying involve attending classes, passing
written exams, providing proof of the adequate amounts of pesticide insurance
and conforming to several other requirements of the Rhode Island Pesticide
Control Act.
