This page outlines the steps that
are required in order to perform certain tasks related to onsite
wastewater treatment systems in the State of Rhode Island. Rhode
Island DEM requires that certain
courses be completed in order to install and design bottomless
sand filters, . Some Rhode Island Towns also have requirements
in order to perform system inspections and operation & maintenance
activities. In many cases, specific courses are not required
by the RI DEM, but we have developed courses that will prepare
folks
for the installer and designer exams.

How to become a Registered Bottomless Sand Filter Installed/Designer
The RIDEM is managing a list of licensed
designers and installers that have take the course “OWT125 - Bottomless Sand Filter
(BSF) Design and Installation”. The course is a one day course,
without examination. There is a prerequisite for this class, you
must take the course “OWT105 - Innovative and Alternative
(I&A) Technology Overview” before the OWT125 course.
In the OWT125 you will learn about basic
bottomless sand filter (BSF) designs and where and when to use
them. Other things that
will be covered are: the essentials about designs, site preparation,
locating components in the treatment train, constructing a filter
enclosure, and packing the filter with media. Later in the day
we’ll view a demonstration BSF at the Training Center located
at URI’s Peckham Farm
