Goals of Wastewater Management Program

• High quality ground and surface waters are essential for the preservation of unique natural resources, on which the Island’s economy , water supply, and character are based.
• Sole source aquifers have limited yield and are vulnerable to contamination.
• The Island needs to ensure proper onsite system function and maintenance, including preventing system failures at high-use rentals and seasonal dwellings.
• The Island needs to reserve sewers for the central core and control sprawl in outlying areas.
• The Island needs to identify appropriate septic system technologies for wetland buffers and other critical areas.
