THE
MAJOR
This joint major, offered by the College
of the Environment and Life Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences,
approaches the study of plants broadly, from molecular genetics to
ecological community dynamics.
The
environmental and performance impacts of these endeavors in natural,
agricultural, and horticultural settings are considered.
It takes a worldwide
view of the effect of plants on people and the environment. Genetics
and molecular biology are studied as a means to improve plants for
human use and environmental enhancement.
A fundamental goal of
the study of plants is to achieve stability in landscapes managed
for environmental or agricultural purposes.
Courses include means
to improve plants, for human use and environmental enhancement,
through genetics and molecular biology.
REQUIREMENTS
All students admitted to the University
of Rhode Island are eligible to major in Environmental Plant Biology.
The program requires:
36 credits in general
education requirements
82-84 in program requirements
10-12 credits in electives
A total of 130 credits
is required for graduation.
The Environmental Plant
Biology major provides a strong foundation in plant structure and
function, diversity, and biotechnology.
A classical education
and core instruction are given in
physiology, biochemistry, genetics, pathology, ecology, and taxonomy.
Exposure to the cutting
edge of research technology is provided by studying the molecular
basis underlying gene action and plant functions and by studying
ecological dynamics in complex plant communities.
Directed hands-on experiences
in laboratories develop understanding and skills in the application
of plant biotechnology to tissue culture, plant pathology, nutrition
and physiology, ecology, and entomology.
Research apprenticeships
are offered and encouraged for students to gain experience and expand
their academic interests.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates pursue careers in biotechnology,
horticulture, landscape management, and plant protection.
FURTHER STUDIES
This major provides an excellent basis
for students who are planning to pursue a graduate degree.
