Curriculum in Biology B.S

Undergraduate programs typically incorporate courses at the 100-, 200-, 300-, and 400-levels. The courses for Biology students are listed below. CORE REQUIREMENTS:

You must take all of the following introductory courses:

  • Principles of Biology I and II (Bio 101, 102).

Additional Core Courses and Major Electives (27 credits):

Choose one course from 4 of the following 6 core areas:

  • Cell and Development: BIO 302, 311, 341, 453
  • Ecology and Evolution: BIO 262, 250
  • Genetics: BIO 352
  • Molecular Biology: BIO 437
  • Organismal Diversity: BIO 304, 321, 323, 354, 366, 432, 465
  • Physiology: BIO 201, 242/244, 346

Plant Courses (at least 3 credits):

  • BIO 311, 321, 323, 332, 346, 348, 418, 432, 465

Animal Courses (at least 3 credits):

  • BIO 121, 201, 242, 244, 302, 304, 327, 329, 331, 334, 335, 354, 355, 366, 385, 386, 441, 442, 445, 446, 467, 469, 475

General Biology Courses :

  • BIO 250, 262, 341, 352, 353, 360, 396, 437, 451, 453, 455, 457, 458, 491, 492

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Chemistry:

  • General Chemistry I and II with lab (CHM 101, 102; 112, 114)

AND two semesters of organic chemistry:

  • Organic Chemistry I and II with lab (CHM 226, 227, 228)

                                   OR

  • Intro to Organic Chem. and Biochemistry (CHM 124, 126; BCH 311)

Mathematics:

  • Applied Calculus I and II (MTH 131, 132)

                                   OR

  • Calculus with Analytic Geometry (MTH 141, 142)

                                   OR

  • One semester of calculus & one of statistics (MTH 131 or 141 & STA 308)

Microbiology:

  • Introductory Microbiology (MIC 211 or MIC 201)

Physics:

  • General Physics I and II with lab (PHY 111, 112; 185, 186)

Language:

  • Modern language through intermediate level (104)

                                   OR

  • 6 credits in one language (note that study abroad and culture clusters do not fulfill this requirement)

Students must take 3 biology laboratory courses in addition to BIO 101, BIO 102 excluding BIO 491, 492, and 495. No more than 3 credits of Research/Special Problems (491, 492, 495) may be used towards the major.

130 credits are required for graduation. A total of 35 credits in BIO courses are required.

Minor in Biology

Requirements: Students who declare Biology as a minor must take BIO 101, BIO 102, and MIC 211 or MIC 201. The remaining courses may be selected from BCH 311 and any BIO or MIC course. At least 18-20 credits are required, and at least 12 of the 20 credits must be taken at the 200 level or above. Other general requirements for the minor are as specified in the University catalog.
