With my significant other, I enjoy antique shopping, travel, and weekends at our vacation home near a tidal river on the lower Eastern Shore of VA, where we enjoy boating and beach combing on the uninhabited barrier islands.  I still enjoy fishing clamming, and, with any luck, duck hunting.
I have been able to attend occasional meetings, most regularly the International Association of Astacology meetings in Germany, Australia, England, and in Louisiana.  I was able to mix some tourism and research-oriented travel to the south of England, Italy, The Netherlands, France, Tasmania, northwest Mexico, and Washington Sate.  I try to attend every meeting in Louisiana that I can.
Finally, I enjoy my two sons.  Jon has completed 70 credits in outdoor education, but is adding courses to enter the engineering program at UMBC or UM.  Brian is married, has a 3-year-old son, and attends McNeese in LA.  This, along with the abundance of my most recent research animal, Procambarus clarkii, explains my interest in Lousiana.  [9/02]

Present name: Gayle Barbin Zydlewski.
Additional degrees: Ph.D. Oceanography, University of Maine, 1996.
Present title and employer: Fisheries Biologist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Abernathy Fish Technology Center.
Work duties: Conduct studies to integrate the underlying behavior and physiology of juvenile and adult salmonids in the ecological context of managing populations.  Physiological monitoring: Physiological factors associated with smolting (the preparedness for seawater entry) of juvenile salmonids are crucial for production of "quality" smolts released from FWS facilities.  This program monitors hatchery stocks for physiological changes, e.g. due to the use of more natural artificial rearing practices (cover, substrate, minimal human interaction, etc.).  We also examine and compare physiological characteristics of naturally-produced and hatchery populations.  Behavioral monitoring and Population dynamics:  Behavioral aspects associated with smolting and interactions of individuals are vital to ultimate success of individual and populations of salmonids. This program monitors the behavior and population dynamics of naturally and artificially produced salmonids. We use Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag technology to monitor behavior of salmonids in the natural environment.  Program personnel provide expertise in development and application of new and innovative protocols for use in addressing fishery management issues

Scappaticci Jr., Albert A.  M.S. Biological Sciences 1999.
Additional degrees: B.S. Zoology, University of Rhode Island, 1996; Currently a Ph.D. candidate in Biological Sciences at URI.
Work duties: I am presently investigating the mechanisms by which hydras (freshwater coelenterates) coordinate prey capture, ingestion, and feeding inhibition; specifically, I am looking at the role that their simple nervous system has in this complex behavior.  For several years in the early part of the 20th century hydra’s effector organs (nematocysts and myonemes) were thought to function as independent effectors: cells that have the ability to act as sensors and effectors without neuronal input.  However, it is now generally accepted that these cells are at least modulated if not under complete control by their simple nervous system.  What is most interesting is that these animals, which are extremely simple, appear to possess the same neuronal control mechanisms that higher organisms have.  This research may lend valuable insights into fundamental questions of how simple animals control complex behavior and the how the complex nervous system evolved.
