But my partner and I have traveled extensively throughout
Europe and North America, have sailed around Cape Horn, been
to Russia, and Hong Kong. Upcoming trips are a transatlantic

My primary job responsibility is to assure that continuing education
opportunities are made available to individuals working in both
public health and clinical laboratories. We accomplish this
through workshops, seminars, video and teleconferences.
A primary focus of our activity is to assure that all clinical
microbiologists are familiar with and can recognize the primary

laboratory issues surrounding the diagnosis of smallpox.
In addition to BT we conduct programs in the areas of HIV/AIDS,
emerging infectious diseases, laboratory quality assurance and
the prevention of medical errors. It’s an interesting job
that requires technical knowledge, management and communication
skills. It also involves significant domestic travel.

that has been accidentally introduced into some of Maine’s coastal
communities. In addition, I have two projects on modeling
the population dynamics of insect/pathogen systems and also
the movement of blueberry flies within a heterogeneous landscape.

Present
title and employer: Professor, Department of Cellular and
Molecular Medicine, University of California, San Diego, School

of California, San Diego; Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical
Institute.
Work
duties: Eukaryotic cells maintain an elaborate system of
vesicular transport pathways that convey cargo between numerous
intracellular organelles. This process preserves the structural
and functional identity of each compartment. Complex regulatory
mechanisms ensure the temporal and spatial specificity of these
membrane trafficking pathways, and certain of the stage-specific
regulators of transport have now been identified. One
of these, the polypeptide ubiquitin, serves not only as a marker
for protein degradation but also as a regulated sorting signal
in both the endocytic and biosynthetic transport pathways. Ubiquitin
is a 76 amino acid protein that becomes conjugated to proteins
through the concerted action of a series of enzymes. This
modification marks proteins for recognition by the protein sorting
machinery. Phosphoinositide lipids also serve as key regulators
of membrane trafficking as well as other cellular processes,
including cell growth, differentiation and cytoskeletal rearrangements.
The large array of unique phosphoinositide stereoisomers has
resulted in the widespread use of phosphoinositides as regulatory
molecules in all eukaryotic organisms. Phosphoinositides
are ideally suited to function as spatially restricted membrane
signals. Both the substrate (PtdIns) and products (phosphoinositides)
are membrane-restricted and the synthesis and turnover of phosphoinositides
can be temporally and spatially regulated by the selective localization
and activation of set of lipid kinases, phosphatases and lipases.
Research in the Emr lab focuses on genetic and biochemical studies
in a model organism, yeast, that have uncovered the roles for
ubiquitin and distinct phosphoinositide lipids in the regulation
of membrane trafficking pathways. The Emr lab has been
able to link both ubiquitin and phosphoinositides to the regulation
of cell surface receptor signaling.
