Research in Dr. Cobb's laboratory focuses on the interface among behavior, ecology, and fisheries. Much of his work has been on crustaceans, particularly lobster. Current projects include studies on issues of crustacean early life history, recruitment, and habitat ecology. Sea Grant provides funding for research on larval exchange between Narragansett Bay and Block Island Sound, a collaborative project with Jeremy Collie and Christopher Kincaid of the School of Oceanography. Sea Grant also funds a study on the incorporation of metapopulation concepts into bioeconomic models, in collaboration with Jon Sutinen of the Department of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. A long term research project has been the study of populations of lobsters on artificial reefs, primarily conducted by graduate student Kathy Castro, with funding by NOAA's Restoration Center. Dr. Cobb also has a long-standing interest in the management of coastal ecosystems.
