How will the RI EPSCoR grant awarded in 2006 facilitate growth in genetics and genomics infrastructure at URI?
The first goal of the RI EPSCoR grant is to attain national prominence and competitive research excellence in the life sciences. We will accomplish this goal by building a competitive research platform in the life sciences that is both statewide and sustainable. Its programs will empower and stimulate researchers to take advantage of advanced technologies through establishment of a center for research excellence in the marine life sciences and statewide core research facilities in genomics and proteomics.
The second goal of the RI EPSCoR grant is to foster and support the synergistic integration of research, education, innovation and communication to build a strong statewide network of RI EPSCoR partners. We will reach this goal by establishing the statewide RI EPSCoR Academy to:
Develop the human capital necessary to support and sustain the growth of competitive research capacity in the life sciences.
Broaden the participation of women and underrepresented ethnic and racial minorities in the STEM workforce.
Provide researchers with targeted entrepreneurial guidance to encourage research innovation, stimulate technology transfer, and promote commercialization and new business development.
Develop and maintain sustainable communication mechanisms to build and enhance a strong statewide network of the state’s and region’s scientists, institutions of higher education, and private and public sectors.
