Science and Engineering (SE) Fellows Program

The Science and Engineering (SE) Fellows Program provides URI students from under-represented cultural backgrounds with interdisciplinary, experiential learning opportunities addressing real-world challenges. The program prepares students from under-represented populations to enter the job market with the skills and training needed to succeed. During the summer semester fellows gain hands-on experience working with research faculty or Cooperative Extension professionals. Fellows enroll in EVS 336 "Communicating Environmental Research and Outreach" during the fall semester, enabling them to communicate their projects to the university community.

Meet our Previous SE Fellows!

When does the program start and how often do students work?

  • The program starts in May and lasts for 14 weeks, where students gain hands-on experience working on projects with URI faculty and staff.
  • Fellows are paid hourly for up to 30 hours per week during the summer.
  • On-campus housing is provided for students with a demonstrated need, where students are given the opportunity to share their experiences openly and learn from one another in a comfortable and supportive environment.

How does the program continue through the fall?

  • Students enroll in the 2-credit hour class EVS 366 "Communicating Environmental Research and Outreach".
  • The class guides students in a step-by step process through the analysis and synthesis of their fellowship work.
  • The course culminates in the preparation and formal presentation of a scientific poster reporting on the work of the fellowship to present in December to the university community.

Who should apply?

We are looking for students with an eagerness for research and learning. We accept those students who demonstrate excellent communication skills, work well with others, and express a willingness to engage in current research topics in their desired field of study.
