Energy Fellows Program

The URI Energy Center provides URI students with an extraordinary opportunity to address the challenges of energy supply in the 21st century.

Beginning in January of 2008, 10 undergraduate students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience solving real-world problems through an exclusive fellowship program that will incorporate both formal research methods and applied outreach efforts. Each fellow will work in teams with a graduate student and faculty advisor to conduct a combined research and outreach project focused within one of the URI Energy Center’s focus areas ( Energy resources research and development; Energy efficiency and technology assessment; Economics and policy analysis; Extension and outreach ).

URI Energy Center Fellows will:

- Learn cutting edge research methods and analytical techniques
- Learn about the confluence of social science and basic research
- Develop leadership skills and learn how to communicate scientific information
- Help implement energy conservation programs based on scientific findings
- Design outreach strategies and evaluate their effectiveness
|

Students will be chosen for their ability to conduct challenging research, work independently, communicate well with others, and exhibit a passion for and sustained interest in their focus area. While preference will be given to energy fellows paired with faculty supporting graduate student researchers all students are welcome to apply.

Fellows will be selected in December of 2007 and will continue through to August of 2008, with the option to renew their fellowship for a second year. In addition to gaining valuable experience conducting research and outreach, fellows will receive specialized leadership and communication training from the Center for Student Leadership Development. Selected fellows will have the opportunity to receive the following benefits:

- Academic year stipend for 10 hours/week
- The opportunity to earn up to 6 internship credits for the academic year
- Summer stipend for 40 hours/week
- Subsidized summer housing in the new URI North Woods Apartments for 5 students
|

Throughout the course of their internship, fellows will participate in URI Energy Center seminars and workshops and will be required to present their research findings to the University community and general public at an annual Energy Forum.
For students interested in energy issues please check out the following opportunities to strengthen your understanding of the topics and to become more involved both on and off campus:
URI Courses
Dr. Grigalunas from the Department of Environment and Natural Resource Economics (ENRE) is offering a 400 level course for undergraduate students on Energy Economics, the Environment, and Policy in the spring 2008 semester. Also offered through this department in the spring of 2008 will be a course entitled “Analysis into Action.” Students will be challenged to apply what they learn in the classroom about evaluating policy and legislation to current pressing problems of our time. |
