Ilex opaca American Holly Small to medium sized evergreen tree, densely pyramidal to conical. Dark green spiny leaves, red berries in fall persisting into winter. Understory plant which tolerates shade or sun. Moist acid well drained soil. Cold hardy, protect from strong winds. Native to RI. 20-40' x 15-30'. ©William S. Justice.
