Dr. Uchida’s research interest is in understanding the microeconomic behavior under institutions and policies to achieve both rural development and sustainable natural resource management. She also studies supply and demand for ecosystem services and how producers and consumers respond to incentive mechanisms to provide ecosystem services. She is conducting research in developing and developed countries and utilizes household surveys, spatial data, econometric and numerical methods. Her recent work includes 1) analyzing of how institutional reform in China and Korea is affecting resource management decisions and resource users' welfare; 2) understanding demand for farmland and forest ecosystem services and designing a market for ecosystem services; 3) examining designs for Payments for Environmental Services to achieve both environmental and development goals; and 4) analyzing forest and urban land use change in China.
