Research Areas:

Dr. Schnier's research is primarily focused on facilitating the development of efficient marine resource policy and determining how fishermen respond to current and prospective fisheries policy. To achieve this goal Dr. Schnier utilizes econometric, experimental and simulation modeling methods. His recent research has focused on 1) the development of dynamic discrete choice models to evaluate the welfare impacts of marine closures; 2) the utilization of market based instruments to manage essential fish habitat; 3) the role of spatial externalities in human decision making; 4) the estimation of excess capacity in fisheries; and 5) investigating the role of spatial/agent heterogeneity in resource modeling. In addition to his research in marine resource management, he has been actively involved in research on charitable auctions and the provision of public goods.
