Undergraduate Fellowship Opportunities -- Program Details


Program Objective:

The U.S.EPA Environmental Sciences Research and Training Opportunities Program is designed to provide opportunities for student scientists at various educational levels to conduct research and receive mentored training in the environmental and ecological sciences in order to understand better and quantify the ecological effects of anthropogenic stressors on the coastal waters and watersheds of the Atlantic seaboard.

Program Elements:

Internships -- Summer, semester, and year-long fellowships are offered. The actual length will be project-specific and subject to negotiation

Stipend -- Fellows could be expected to devote 20 hours per week for 12 weeks during the summer and 10 - 15 hours per week during the academic year. Fellows will receive $10.00 per hour.

Travel --Travel allowances will be provided to travel from home institution to work at the NHEERL divisions of interest and/or travel to a national meeting.

Tuition --Tuition is not generally offered to undergraduate students for these experiences, although we reserve the flexibility to include tuition, should a student’s situation demand such compensation in order to allow him/her to participate in the program.

Housing -- Summer housing is available and a subsidy will be provided if student lives away from home.

Additional assistance -- Other allowable expenses approved by the program sponsor.

Special activities include:

  • A student symposium for presentation of research
    Workshops will be conducted to assist students in communicating individual research topics and findings in a variety of formats for a variety of different audiences. Students will be introduced to the essential components of effective scientific communication and to techniques for developing large-format scientific posters.
  • Guest speakers
  • Field trips
  • Attendance at a national meeting to present research completed

Qualifications:

  • All candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America.
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time at their home institution.
  • Applicants should have completed their sophomore class requirements prior to start of internship.
  • Overall minimum GPA requirement is 2.5 (based on a A=4.0)

Program Deadline: June 10, 2005

* Internships may be terminated if the conditions of the appointment are not met.
