Petrology Option

Above and beyond the general education, supporting science, and core curricular courses, the Petrology option requires the following courses: 

  • GEO 421 – Geochemistry (3 credits)

  • GEO 530 – Petrogenetic Igneous Processes (3 credits), or GEO 531 – Metamorphic Petrology (3 credits)

Students must further select from the following elective courses to complete the major.  Two courses should be selected, consisting of 6-8 credits:

GEO 465 – Introduction to Geophysics(3 credits)

GEO 468 – Ground-Water Geochemistry (4 credits)

GEO 554 – Sedimentary Petrology (3 credits)

GEO 530 – Petrogenetic Igneous Processes (3 credits), or GEO 531 – Metamorphic Petrology (3 credits))

GEO 565 – Geophysical Models (3 credits)

GEO 580 – New England Geology (3 credits)

CHM 431 – Physical Chemistry (3 credits)

The balance of the 126 credits required for the B.S. in Geosciences major may be taken as free electives.
