The Interior of the Earth

Faculty: Brian Savage, O. Don Hermes, D. P. Murray, J. Allan Cain

Collaborative Faculty: S. N. Carey, Y. Shen, C. Kincaid, K. Kelly (Graduate School of Oceanography).

Research focuses on igneous and metamorphic rocks, and the interpretations of earth processes relevant to mantle and crustal evolution and stability. Recent research includes:
  • Modification of Archean Age Cratons by Flood Basalts in Southern Africa
  • Subduction plate internal structure imaged through seismology and mineral constraints
  • Investigations into the initiation of rifting in the Gulf of California
  • Investigation of mountain-building events in the New England segment of the Appalachians.
  • Study of the dynamics of large-scale magma chambers, such as those of the Sierra Nevada.
  • Investigating the role of magma-mixing in the formation of granites.
  • Use of trace elements to characterize orogenic vs. anorogenic tectonic regimes.
  • Investigation of the metamorphism of carbonaceous materials.
