Course Description Coastal regions around the world are experiencing growing pressures from increased coastal populations and higher resource demands. To ensure that coastal regions maintain their ecological functions while serving the needs of this ever-growing population (i.e. food, transportation, etc.), it is necessary to manage human activities at the land-sea interface. Welcome to Marine Affairs 461, Coastal Zone Management! In this course, we will explore ways in which human activities are managed in the coastal environment. We will examine the major concepts in coastal zone management. Examples from the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and other locations will illustrate these concepts. Significant attention will be given to the U.S. Coastal Zone Management Program. |
