What are marine protected areas (MPAs)? How and where have they been implemented? How are they evaluated? What are the natural, political, social, cultural, legal, and economic factors related to the design, management, and evaluation of MPAs? What is our current state of knowledge of these factors? What do we still need to know? Welcome to Marine Affairs 526, Management of Marine Protected Areas! In MAF 526, we will try to answer these questions. We will explore the myriad of concepts related to marine protected areas. The topic of MPA management does not fall within a distinct discipline. Instead MPA management draws on numerous fields and theories from the natural and social sciences. And the debate surrounding MPAs and their management is constantly evolving. In this course, we will examine the current state of knowledge of MPAs and MPA management. We will use a variety of perspectives to guide us as we evaluate the use of MPAs as a marine management tool. |
