Richard Pollnac has conducted research among coastal peoples in all major world regions, including Africa, South East Asia, the Middle East, Europe, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, and the Americas (North, Central, and South). Most recently his research has been focused in South East Asia. In the Fall of 2002 Pollnac conducted a post-evaluation of a coastal management project in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, completing his contribution to the preliminary assessment, monitoring and evaluation of this project, which has been ongoing since 1997. In May 2002 and May and June 2003 he helped develop methods for rapid assessment of coastal communities in Alaska with Seth Macinko. He is also working with Seth Macinko on a project evaluating the effectiveness of communications between Rhode Island fishers and managers concerning a licensing scheme. Additionally, he has been involved in a project investigating sustainability of integrated coastal management projects in the Philippines and Indonesia (2001-2003). In 2000 he conducted an assessment of 45 community based marine protected areas in the Philippines and has presented his findings in publications and at several professional meetings. He has also been involved in conducting post-evaluations of community-based coastal zone management projects in the Philippines (1995-1997), and establishing social, cultural, and economic indicators for the world-wide coral reef data base (ReefBase), including field work testing the indicators in the Philippines and Jamaica (1995-1998).
