CELS Scholarships

The College proudly offers a number of scholarships to support the work of its students. These funds come from private endowments as well as from state and federally supported programs.

Basis: Financial need, academic performance, and interest.

Awarded to an undergraduate interested in researching ways to protect the environment.

Mary Williams Browning   Awarded annually to a Junior in Microbiology by the Department of Cellular & Molecular Biology
W. Berkley Carter   Awarded in turf management
John Samuel Clapper

 

Awarded in CELS, to juniors or seniors
Basis: "marked and abiding interest" in turf
Dr. James W. & Mildred L. Cobble Awarded

Awarded in CELS to a senior, junior, or sophomore
Basis: primarily financial need, accompanied by evidence of satisfactory progress toward a degree.

CELS Merit Scholarship   Awarded to a deserving student on the basis of merit. (Highest GPA).
Kenelm W. Coons

 

Award to assist a grad student returning to school mid-career to pursue M.A. in marine affairs.

Gene & Marion Croce

 

Selected in conjunction with Enrollment Services. Italian-American majoring in pre-med.

Awarded in Fisheries and Marine Technology
Basis: financial need

Alexander D. Daunis  

Awarded in Fisheries and Aquaculture Technology Program, specializing in Marine Fisheries. Preference to upper class students from Northeast region (ME-NC) maintaining a 3.0 GPA..

Joseph D. DiMase  

Junior or Senior in pre-med Basis: financial need.

Robert A. DeWolf  

Awarded in Zoology annually.

Wayne King & Bernice Anderson Durfee

 

Scholarship in aquaculture
Basis: merit to a junior, senior, or graduate student in the program for a least 1 yr. Interest in shellfish a 1st priority.

Eastern Cooperative Extension Scholarship  

Awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student in CELS with preference to 4-H members from Newport County.

John J. Fisher  

Annual award in Geology to Grad. Assistant demonstrating superior service to dept. and maintaining a strong academic record. (Usually given as a GIFT.)
Check with department directly.

Mabel Goshdigian  

Awarded in Dietetics
Basis: merit

Ruth & Morton Grossman

 

Awarded to support turf studies.

Harold Browning Prize

 

Awarded to two outstanding Juniors majoring in either Env. Plant Bio or Physics and Physical Oceanography.
Recipients selected by chair of dept.

Hardee's Endowed Merit Scholarship

 

2 scholarships in CELS
Basis: Merit
To sophomore or junior in CELS who maintains 3.5 average and entered as a freshman on a merit scholarship basis. If possible, to go to an underrepresented category.

Matthew J. Horridge  

Awarded to a full-time, in-state student(s): sophomore, junior, or senior enrolled in turf grass mgmt.

Cedric C. Jennings  

Income for internships for graduate students in Entomology or Plant Pathology
Basis: Financial need

Kingston Hill Gardeners  

Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Plant Studies Basis: academic merit & interest

Awarded for four years to an incoming freshman student in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences on the basis of academic merit and interest in environmental issues and studies.

Charles E Olney

 

Awarded to an undergraduate majoring in NFS and committed to a career in Food Science
Basis: merit and need.

Al Owens  

Awarded in CELS on basis of merit.

Jean Louise Pimental

 

Awarded in Animal Science to deserving student. Preference to undergraduate female from RI.

John E. Powell  

Awarded in CELS to junior or senior students
Basis: worthiness and financial need.

Mary S. Ravin  

Awarded to the Pre-med highest ranked female at the close of her Junior year.

Anna & Silvio Quattrini  

Awarded to undergraduate in CELS. Preference given to native RI with financial need. The Quattrinis were avid gardeners and landscapers whose love for beauty and nature inspired this fund.

Rhode Island Dietetics Association  

Awarded to seniors majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics who are RI residents.
Basis: financial need, academic performance & interest, effort, & commitment to pursuing a career in dietetics.
Unique deadline. Check with dept.

Harold Riemenschneider  

Awarded to a student pursuing radiation studies in either the Biology or Chemistry department. Preference only to radiation studies.

RINLA/URI Plant Science Scholarship  

Awarded by Plant Sciences.

Salt Ponds Coalition: Abby Aukerman  

Scholarship to junior in good academic standing majoring in marine related science; preference given to individual planning career in environmental management whose family resides in South County.

Brett Santoro Memorial Scholarship  

Awarded annually to a student majoring in Biological Sciences.
Basis: need.

C. Richard Skogley

 

Awarded to students studying turf grass.

Barbara K. Simmons

  Awarded to a student from Aquidneck Island. 1st preference: a student who is involved in work at the Agricultural Experiment Station in diseases in farm animals. Recipient selected by Enrollment Services.
Basis: need and above average academic.

Norman and Alicia Tashash

  Awarded to a Junior interested in Molecular or Microbiology.
Basis: merit.

Karen and Rick Volk

  Awarded to an Animal Science major. Preference to incoming freshman.
Basis: need and merit.

Watershed Watch

  Awarded to undergraduates with majors in the Dept. of Natural Resource Science.
Basis: good academic standing; an interest in watershed sciences, water quality, environmental sciences, environmental mgmt. and/or soil sciences.

Weekapaug Foundation Environmental Scholarship

Awarded Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate with demonstrated conservation ethic and academic achievement enrolled in an environmental science, planning and policy, or life science major in CELS.

David Wilkes

  Income from endowment used to assist CELS under the direction of the Dean.

Norris Wood

  Annual award in field of microbiology.
