The University of Rhode Island's Chinese Flagship Immersion Program is an 8-week, residential Mandarin Chinese immersion program for students commited to an intensive, experiential, proficiency-based learning experience. The 2014 program offers one level of instruction, designed for first-year Flagship students, who have completed CHN 112H or its equivalent, but is open to any student at the Novice High/Intermediate Low level interested in an immersive language learning experience.

The URI Chinese Flagship Immersion Program offers intermediate intensive courses in Mandarin Chinese designed to take students from Novice High/Intermediate Low to Intermediate Mid proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing (on the ACTFL scale). Participants earn 8 Chinese language credits during the 8-week program, and commit to a strict Language Pledge (see application).

Housing & Dining:
Participants in the Chinese Flagship Immersion Program are housed in the IEP (International Engineering Program) House on the Kingston Campus of the University of Rhode Island. In addition to a living room, dining room, laundry room and activity room, the IEP House has single and double dormitory style rooms on three floors. Shared men's and women's bathrooms are on the first and second floor. The main floor features a large living room where comfortable high back chairs and plush sofas surround the fireplace, while another section provides for large conference tables and excellent lighting for daytime and late-night study sessions in Chinese. Chef Mark Schoenweiss prepares three meals per day Monday through Saturday with the exception of dinner on Saturday throughout the program. Parking is available next to the house.
The Chinese Flagship Immersion Program is generously supported by the University of Rhode Island. All students pay the same tuition rate, regardless of residency. The total estimated cost of the 2014 program including tuition and fees; room and board; textbooks and the mid-program excursion is below:

Graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate students at URI or other institutions who have taken a minimum of one year of college-level Chinese or equivalent, and whose proficiency is at the Novice High or Intermediate Low level, are encouraged to apply. Priority consideration is granted to students currently enrolled in or admitted to any Chinese Flagship Program.
