URI Flagship Scholars typically complete the Capstone Year in China during their fourth year. Students who enter URI with Advanced Chinese language skills may be eligible to complete the Capstone Year as juniors, but should consult with the Flagship Director and Coordinator and their academic advisors early.
The Capstone Year consists of two major components:
The Nanjing Chinese Flagship Center is located at Nanjing University in the capital of the Jiangsu Province. Nanjing is located approximately two hours west of Shanghai by train. Flagship Scholars take a combination of Flagship language courses and direct enrollment courses in their individual disciplines, and live with Chinese roommates.
Formal Components
Informal Components
All Flagship Scholars must complete an internship in China closely related to their major and career goals. If you are an engineering student, you may intern for Hexagon Metrology, Pentair, Siemens, and many others. Pre-law students have worked for NGOs, law firms, and orphanages. Textile Marketing and Fashion Merchandising students have worked for the Nanjing Silk Brocade, which specializes in traditional Chinese clothing. During the semester in Nanjing, Flagship Scholars meet with the Flagship Internship Director to identify a placement suitable to his or her field of study.
