Chinese Language Flagship Program

Curriculum

In the URI Chinese Language Flagship Program, we have a flexible curriculum that can accommodate any Chinese proficiency level, whether you’re a heritage speaker, a long-time student of Chinese, or a student with little or no background in Mandarin. For students with background in Chinese, there will be an interview in Mandarin during the application process for class placement purposes.  Below is a general outline of what new students can expect their Flagship curriculum to look like based on their background in Mandarin Chinese.

You may begin the program at any level. If you have studied Chinese previously or are a heritage speaker of Chinese, your proficiency will be assessed in order to place you into the appropriate course upon admission to the program.

One-Summer Track

The average Flagship student studies during two summers throughout Flagship, but the occasional student has found that domestic summer study (between CHN 112 and CHN 215) is not feasible for them. With explicit permission, these students take the “one-summer track.”
