Hong Qian is Lecturer in Chinese at the University of Rhode Island, teaching courses for both the Chinese language program and the Chinese Language Flagship Partner Program. Hong earned her Master's degree from Rhode Island College in 2008, a B.A. in English from Nanjing Normal University in 2004, and an A.S. in Computer Science in 2001.
Hong enjoys transferring Chinese culture and Chinese language to American students. She taught Chinese to faculty members at Stanford University in 2005 and to students in grades K-6 at DEANZA Elementary School in Cupertino, CA as well. When Hong came to Rhode Island, she continued to teach Chinese to students in grades K-12 at the Star Chinese School from 2006-2008.
In addition to Chinese teaching, Hong is also passionate about teaching ESL (English as a second language) to immigrants. She taught ESL at the Genesis Center in Providence, RI in 2008 and tutored high school students in ESL in 2007.
Hong’s teaching philosophy is, “The teacher is the person who teaches students knowledge, tells them the way to live, and answers their questions." She believes that her enthusiastic, cultural-technological approach enables students to acquire language skills in a manner that keeps them interested and motivated, and requires their own critical thinking of discussion points which makes their learning their own.
Hong also likes to travel, listen to music, and cook.
