The URI Chinese Summer School is an eight-week Chinese language immersion program for students at the novice and intermediate levels of Mandarin proficiency. Flagship Bound students who enter URI with little to no prior knowledge of Chinese must complete this program in the summer following the freshman year. The first four weeks of the program take place on the Kingston Campus of the University of Rhode Island. Students and faculty live together in a supportive living and learning community, where all participants commit to communicating only in Mandarin Chinese. Instruction is focused on all four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In addition to intensive coursework, cultural workshops and tutoring sessions are offered in the afternoons. After a month at URI, the group travels to China for another month of Chinese immersion at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, giving students the opportunity to practice newly acquired skills in country.
Flagship students who begin their study of Chinese as freshmen at URI, must participate in the URI Chinese Summer School and complete CHN 113-114, the second year sequence, during the summer following freshmen year.
