Winter Immersion Program

 

Where: URI in Kingston, RI

When:  Last two weeks of Winter Break: Jan. 6-17, 2014

Levels: For newly-admitted URI Chinese Flagship Scholars entering CHN 112H after completion of CHN 101 in the fall; and for 300- and 400-level Chinese Flagship Scholars preparing for Capstone.

 

Summary:  The Winter Immersion Program is a requirement of all Flagship students and is offered at no additional cost.  Students commit to speaking only Mandarin Chinese for the two-week program.  The program is designed to boost students’ Chinese language skills in general, and more specifically requires students to build a working vocabulary within their individual academic disciplines.

Purpose:  The Chinese Winter Immersion Program will:

  1. Improve students’ speaking and writing skills in Chinese extensively.
  2. Accelerate the learning process in an immersion environment.
  3. Require students to think critically about Chinese cultural issues.
  4. Require students to complete an individualized project pertaining to their major.
  5. Build community and cohesion in the URI Chinese Flagship.

Topics:

  1. Oral Proficiency Training (2 hours/day)
  2. Extensive Reading (2 hours/day)
  3. Grammar (1 hour every other day)
  4. Culture (1 hour every other day) - Class discussion and debate
  5. Domain-based individualized study project (1 hour/day) - Individual projects and presentations, individualized writing tutorials.
  6. Cultural and Tutoring Program (2 hours/evening)

Meals:  The group is required to take meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) together as part of the immersion experience.  The Chinese Language Flagship Partner Program provides meals.

Housing:  All students are required to live in the Heidi Kirk Duffy Center, on campus, or within a short drive from campus to guarantee the highest possible results from this program.  Students who live further away are provided housing in the Heidi Kirk Duffy Center.

 

Winter Program in China

 

Where: Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, China

When:  Dec. 28 -  Jan. 17, 2014

Levels: For students enrolled in CHN 111H, 102, 103, 205, or 215H in fall 2013.

Cost: Approximately $3,000, scholarships available.

Application Deadline: Oct. 21, 2013

Summary:  The Winter Program in China is optional for Flagship students and non-Flagship students enrolled in the aforementioned levels of Chinese and is offered at a nominal cost.  The trip will begin with a three-day tour a Beijing, where we will visit the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and other sights in the capital city.  We will travel south to Hangzhou, where we will study Chinese for two weeks at Zhejiang University nearby picturesque West Lake.  The final day will be spent in Shanghai before returning to the U.S.
