Dr. Wen Xiong is Assistant Professor of Chinese and Associate Director of the Chinese Language Flagship and the Chinese International Engineering Programs (IEP) at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Xiong earned her B.A. and M.A. at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China and started her career in teaching Chinese as a second language in 1989. She joined us in 2006 from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, where she completed her PhD dissertation in the area of teaching and learning of Chinese as a foreign language.

 

While pursuing her doctorate, Dr. Xiong also taught Chinese language and culture at La Trobe University, Monash University, RMIT, the Victoria University of Technology, and Deakin University. Prior to her time in Melbourne, Dr. Xiong had been a well-established scholar in her field; she served as Associate Professor of Chinese Language and Literature and as Director of the Center for Teaching & Researching Chinese as a Second Language at Shanghai University from 1994-2000. In 2002, she was one of twelve people recognized as "National Best Teacher of Chinese as a Second Language" by the Ministry of Education of China. This was the first time that such an award had been made in China. She was also a Visiting Scholar & Co-research Fellow at the University of Technology, Sydney in Australia and spent two years teaching at the National University of Laos. Dr. Xiong initiated and leads in the development of the Chinese Language Program in the Department of Modern & Classic Languages and Literature and also works as Director of the Chinese Summer Immersion Program at URI.

Dr. Xiong's research interests focus on the learning and teaching of Chinese as a second or foreign language and the acquisition of Chinese language and culture. She was one of the chief editors of a six book text series (Hanyu Tingli Jiaocheng, Listening Course for Modern Standard Chinese, Beijing Language and Culture University Press, 2000) and a book on reading (Chuji Hanyu Yuedu Jiaocheng, Elementary Chinese Reading Comprehension, Beijing Language and Culture University Press, 2002) for foreigners studying Modern Standard Chinese. Her publications address the following research areas: Chinese linguistics, language contrast, language acquisition, language teaching, and Chinese cultural studies.
