Dr. Wen Xiong (Ph.D. La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia) is the Director of the Chinese Summer School, Assistant Professor of Chinese, and Associate Director of the Chinese Language Flagship and the Chinese International Engineering Programs (IEP) at the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Xiong earned her B.A. and M.A. at East China Normal University, Shanghai, China and started her career in teaching Chinese as a second language in 1989. She joined us in 2006 from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, where she completed her PhD dissertation in the area of teaching and learning of Chinese as a foreign language.

While pursuing her doctorate, Dr. Xiong also taught Chinese language and culture at La Trobe University, Monash University, RMIT, the Victoria University of Technology, and Deakin University.  Prior to her time in Melbourne, Dr. Xiong had been a well-established scholar in her field; she served as Associate Professor of Chinese Language and Literature and as Director of the Center for Teaching & Researching Chinese as a Second Language at Shanghai University from 1994-2000.  In 2002, she was one of twelve people recognized as "National Best Teacher of Chinese as a Second Language" by the Ministry of Education of China.  This was the first time that such an award had been made in China.  She was also a Visiting Scholar & Co-research Fellow at the University of Technology, Sydney in Australia and spent two years teaching at the National University of Laos.
