Mission

The University of Rhode Island Office for Civility Education, based out of the Office of Student Life, works to encourage a civil community that upholds the pursuit of knowledge with honesty, integrity, and courage while respecting the rights and dignity of all others.

Office Responsibilies

The Office for Civility Education addresses issues of hazing, cyber harassment, student bullying, disruptive students and related situations with the goal of generating a cultural shift towards increased community civility and interpersonal responsibility.  The office provides assistance, support and resources around these issues as well as operates proactively through activities raising awareness about civil interaction.

Civility Mentors

The Civility Mentors are trained undergraduate and graduate students who model & teach bystander responsibility in regard to issues of civility. Civility Mentors provide educational programs and facilitate proactive related programs for the campus community. If you are interested in applying to be a Civility Mentor please contact the office to obtain an application.

Workshops

The Office for Civility Education offers educational workshops for classes, athletic teams, residence halls, Greek houses, and student groups as well as for faculty and staff members. Workshops are customized to meet the specific needs of the individual group. Topics covered can include hazing, cyber harassment, disruptive students, uncivilized, inappropriate or harassing behaviors as well as a variety of related issues.
