  • 12:15 p.m.—Graduate Degree Candidates assemble in academic attire in the west corridor of the Ryan Center. Enter through the north (Plains Road) entrance (Lincoln Almond Plaza). Please be prompt. The marshals will organize the line of march by degree to be conferred and in alphabetical order.

  • 1 p.m.—Commencement exercises begin in the Ryan Center. Graduate degree recipients will march into the arena and sit in designated areas. During the ceremony, they will be escorted to the stage by University marshals and file across the platform. Doctoral recipients will be hooded and escorted by their major professors.

    Mary KennardSpeaker: Mary E. Kennard, Esq., Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, American University

    Mary E. Kennard has been invited to speak at the University's Graduate Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18. Kennard brings her years of rich experience to the University as chief legal counsel, to her students at the Washington College of Law, and also to college administrators nationwide.

    Before joining American University in 1995, Kennard served for eight years as a vice president and general counsel for the University of Rhode Island. She was the University's first female African American Vice President and was actively involved in highlighting the value and importance of diversifying the campus.

    In recognition of her years of leadership in law and higher education, Kennard will be awarded the Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.
