THE URI Community Music Program exists to provide high quality music instruction to community members of all ages. We offer

  • private lessons in most instruments and voice

  • class instruction in piano for beginning adults 4-7 year olds, and jazz theory

  • Ensembles in Jazz and Guitar

  • Summer String Week July 7-12, 2014

  • Summer Intensive Jazz Camp July 14-18, 2014

  • Jazz Theory Class II
    Need to learn more about the theory behind playing jazz? We can teach you! Taught by jazz guitarist Clay Nordhill, this class will meet on Saturdays from 9:00-10:00 am starting March 29th
    (8 weeks).

  • . This class will focus on jazz theory, harmony and the fundamentals of jazz improvisation. Class time will be split between written work and instrumental application. Topics will include diatonic harmony, common chord progressions, song forms, ensemble playing, swing phrasing, and practice routine. Required materials for this course include instruments, pencils, and manuscript paper. The fee for this class is $150.
    We will offer a $25 discount for students who are already registered for the jazz combo program.
  • Saturday morning Jazz Combos Spring Session (8 weeks)will begin March 29th

Community Guitar Ensemble

The University of Rhode Island's Community Guitar Ensemble, hosted by the Community Music Program, is dedicated to bringing opportunities for guitar as a collaborative experience to URI and the South County community. The RICGE (Rhode Island Community Guitar Ensemble) is comprised of amateur and professional acoustic guitarists. The ensemble will give several performances throughout the year. The aim of the ensemble is to bring guitar to the forefront of the community  enabling artistic expression and  collaboration.

The ensemble is open to any member of any age and ability. Nylon string guitars are preferred but will accept steel string guitars; electric guitars are not allowed in the group. A student must provide their own materials (guitar, foot rest, and possibly music stand). Music will be given at the start of each session. Fee $150.


WInter lessons begin in January. Please refer to the teacher/instrument list to see who is available and when they will begin teaching.

We offer private lessons in voice, piano and most instruments to children and adults. To see a list of available teachers and instruments, click here.

Private lessons are given weekly (generally 30 minutes) and are scheduled by the individual teachers after registration and payment have been received by the office.

To register for private lessons go to the teacher and instrument list to see which instruments and instructors are available, then print a registration form and send it in with your payment in full for the number of weeks remaining in the session. Fees vary by teacher level. Go to rates and fees for more information.

You will be contacted by a teacher to arrange a lesson time after we have processed your registration form and payment. You will be refunded if you cannot schedule successfully with a teacher, but payment in full is required in advance.

Lessons may begin at any time during the session if space is available


Registration Policy for
private lessons

Once we have recieved your form and payment we will have a teacher contact you to schedule lessons. We will hold your check until lessons have been scheduled and return it to you if scheduling is impossible.
