As many of you are aware, on May 12, 2008 a 7.9 magnitude earthquake devastated Southwest China. Towns were destroyed and families were lost. Over the last week, news outlets have reported that hundreds of aftershocks have caused the collapse of many more buildings and multiple landslides further damaging the already broken communities in the Si Chuan province.
Chinese authorities have reported the number of dead or missing to be more than 70,000, and an estimated 5 million people are believed to have become homeless due to the earthquake.
In response to this tragedy, Rhode Island’s Chinese community has started a relief fund to aid the victims and rescue efforts in China.
The funds are being raised by a group of local Chinese organizations that started the China Earthquake Relief Committee of Rhode Island.
The organization expects to raise a total of $200,000, with all proceeds to benefit the China Red Cross, which is providing aid to the earthquake victims.
The group is urging the public and businesses to contribute to their effort. All contributions made will be tax deductible. Please contribute what you can in one of the following three ways:
- Contributions can be made at any Rhode Island branch of Sovereign Bank, payable to China Earthquake Relief Fund
- Mail contributions to:
