Graduate Assistantship
The Counseling Center at the University of Rhode Island is offering two twenty-hour per week clinical graduate traineeships. The graduate traineeship program was established to underscore the value and priority that the Counseling Center places on high quality training in professional preparation, and offers supervised experiences in individual clinical formats, crisis intervention, psychological assessment and diagnosis, ADHD screening, outreach, consultation/education, and other activities appropriate to the University setting. The traineeship also includes a year-long training seminar, and a combined two hours per week of individual and group supervision. Traineeships are typically extended to advanced graduate students in Clinical Psychology, School Psychology, Psychiatric Nursing, and the Marriage and Family Therapy programs at URI.
The Counseling Center is the mental health resource for the approximately 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students at the University. Students use our services for a variety of problems, which range from normal developmental issues to more extreme dysfunction. Typical presenting problems include interpersonal concerns, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, lack of motivation or concentration, substance abuse, poor academic performance, and sexual difficulties.
The traineeship begins in late August and extends through Commencement Day in May, with some leave for vacation. It involves a commitment of 20 working hours per week. Participation in all phases of the agency's delivery system is expected of each trainee, including occasional attendance at staff meetings. The remuneration for the academic year (barring changes in the union contract) ranges from $12,044 - $12,956 plus tuition waiver, health insurance, sick leave and vacation leave. Trainees may take no more than nine credits per semester.
Application and Selection
An application form for the Counseling Center's assistantship can be found on-line at: (TraineeApplication 08 09.pdf). All application materials (application form, transcript, resume, and reference forms completed by two referees) should be submitted together in a large envelope by March 5th. Applicants are discouraged from using campus mail to deliver materials to the Center, as timeliness of delivery is sometimes a problem. Please remember to provide a telephone number where you can be reached during Spring Recess.
All documents will be reviewed following the close of the application period and a limited number of applicants will be invited for interviews, which are tentatively scheduled for mid March. The position will be awarded within two (2) weeks after completion of interviews.
Candidates who are invited for an interview can expect to meet with Counseling Center clinical staff. Invited candidates should prepare a brief (approximately 10 minutes) case presentation for this meeting. The purpose of the interview is to become better acquainted with each candidate's clinical interests, experience, and motivation for seeking the position. Questions can be directed to Marge Franca-Terceira, Psy.D at the URI Counseling Center, (401) 874-2288.
