Welcome from the Director of Campus Planning & Design

Welcome! Campus Planning & Design strives to build the University of Rhode Island campuses to be places where people can teach, learn, and serve the community to their fullest potential. We are keenly interested in understanding the character and strategic direction of URI’s academic community, and in shepherding our institutional resources to best benefit URI’s mission for a sustainable future.

Our three major functions are Planning, Design, and Project Management. Campus Planning & Design helps envision and implement comprehensive strategies of land and facility utilization to advance the needs of the University. By integrating academic planning, program facilities planning, capital resource management, and exceptional architectural and campus design, we are continuously improving the environment in which our community realizes its goals and aspirations.

The CP&D office facilitates comprehensive physical master planning, project feasibility studies, and the development of project budgets and funding strategies. We oversee the development of all four University of Rhode Island campuses (Kingston, Providence, the Bay Campus, and W. Alton Jones) from our office on the Kingston Campus. Our work includes the development of the University’s five-year Capital Improvement Plan, the design of new and renovated university facilities, landscape planning, and the enhancement and allocation of campus space.

In 2010, Campus Planning & Design expanded to include the URI Sustainability Office, the organizational arm of the President’s Council on Sustainability. This office manages ongoing programs and assists in the development of policies related to the Strategic Plan for Campus Sustainability. This plan will guide the integration of sustainability into the culture of the University and allow our campuses to serve as models of sustainable practices and principles for URI students, faculty, staff, and the local community. This year we are also pleased to announce a new partnership with Keough Construction Management, a Rhode Island firm providing CP&D with in-house project management and administrative staff for many of our major architectural projects.
