Dr. Baxter Joins the Organizing Committee of Symposium for Submarine Mass Movements
Dr. Baxter joined the Organizing Committee of the 4th International Symposium on Submarine Mass Movements
and their Consequences, to be held in Austin, TX, November 8-11, 2009. This symposium is part of an initiative of the International Geoscience
Programme, a joint endeavor of UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences.
The main objective of this event is to bring a world perspective of submarine mass movements and their consequences by assembling excellent contributions from active international researchers, academic institutions and the oil and gas industries.
Professor Baxter is an expert on submarine slope stability analysis. He recently completed a six-month sabbatical at the International Centre for Geohazards at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute in Oslo where he worked on an oil-industry funded project on the effect of gas hydrate dissociation on submarine soils. This work has applications to the assessment of offshore geohazards, such as submarine slope stability failures, on pipelines and other seafloor installations.
Professor Baxter was also recently elected to the Board of Govenors of the United States Universities Council for Geotechnical Education and Research (USUCGER). This organization consists of over 400 geotechnical faculty with the mission of improving geotechnical education and funding levels throughout the U.S
