This section contains links to information on health, prevention and wellness. The list of links is not intended to be comprehensive in nature but rather to contain quality resources on health, prevention and wellness. Preference has been given to non-commercial sites including those sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and related groups, as well as those by national nonprofit and professional organizations. The information contained at these sites should never be used as a substitute for regular medical care and advice from your doctor, pharmacist or other health professional.
  • Agency for Health Care Research and Quality - This website from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality contains fact sheets on ways to prevent medical errors, steps to safer health care, guides to choosing quality health care, questions to ask about tests, prescriptions and surgery.
  • American Academy of Family Physicians - This website provides families with health topics, self-care, and healthy living ideas.
  • American Pharmaceutical Association - This website provides over 30 consumer and patient-oriented brochures, with topics ranging from general self-care with OTC products and herbal products to the management of diabetes. Spanish versions of 19 brochures are available.
  • British United Provident Association - This website from the British United Provident Association provides general information on diverse topics related to health, medial conditions and treatments.
  • Centers for Disease Control- Travel Information - This website from the Centers for Disease Control provides comprehensive health information on topics related to travel throughout the world including destinations, diseases, outbreaks, vaccinations, and official references.
  • Federal Citizen Information Center - This website from the Federal Citizen Information Center contains over 80 different fact sheets and brochures on health-related topics of interest to consumers. Topics range from information about specific diseases to OTC drug use to general health issues
  • Healthy People 2010 - This website from Healthy People 2010 contains links to sites containing information on making healthy choices and on other general health information.
  • National Health Information Center - This website from the National Health Information Center of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion of DHHS contains links to all of the 2003 Federal Health Information Centers and Clearinghouses including those with the National Institutes
  • National Institute on Aging - This website from the National Institute on Aging contains a Resource Director for Older Adults, as well as many Federal government links of interest to the elderly.
  • National Institutes of Health - This new website is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Currently two topics on exercise for older adults and on Alzheimer’s disease are discussed.
  • National Library of Medicine-Health and Professional Organizations - This website is sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and is linked to other NLM/NIH, major governmental health organizations and professional health organizations.
  • National Library of Medicine-Prevention and Wellness Topics - This website is sponsored by the National Library of Medicine. Six tutorials with slides and sound are available on general prevention and wellness topics, and are available in English and Spanish.
  • PharmacyChecker.com - This website provides consumer tips on the risks and benefits of using on-line pharmacies. Some information at the site requires a subscription, but the tips are free.
  • RI Department of Health - This site provides health topics, programs and services, public health news, and publications pertaining to the state of Rhode Island
  • Smoking Cessation Strategies for the 21st Century (Circulation, 2001) - This website from Circulation’s Cardiology Patient Page provides comprehensive information on smoking cessation strategies.
