Laboratory (lab) blood tests and other procedures are one type of tool that your doctor may use to diagnose diseases or to chose and monitor your treatment. The following links provide information about common lab tests and other diagnostic procedures that your doctor may order.
Remember that most lab tests and diagnostic procedures can have false “positives” and “negatives”. For example, if your doctor orders a lab test for cholesterol and other fats in the blood and you accidentally eat before the test, the test for triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood) will be falsely increased. Only your doctor or other health professional can interpret your specific results from different lab tests.
- MedicineNet - This specific link is to a comprehensive directory of medical procedures and tests. The descriptions of some terms (for example, C-reactive protein) are linked to primary medical literature identifying its potential importance.
- National Library of Medicine - The encyclopedia is from the A.D.A.M. Health Illustrated Encyclopedia with over 4,000 entries. Information on test results such as the Chem-7 is presented in a logical, step-by-step format. It is available in English and Spanish.
- National Library of Medicine - This website is sponsored by the National Library of Medicine. Eighteen tutorials with slides and sound are available on tests and diagnostic procedure topics, and are available in English and Spanish.
